The Chinese Sources Are Biased Toward Merchants

From the ninth century until about just the end of tenth century, they are almost all from judyong province. But you also do see some merchants from places like sujo and and areas a little further north. As for who they were, that's an interesting question as well. Typically look at them from the point of view of the official sources, the chinese sources, where they're just simply required as merchants. They're just plain old merchants. That's it.
