The Importance of Historical Scholarship in Medical School

During his medical training he encountered violence on the wards of a Chicago hospital. This led him to think about anthropology and how it could be used for social change. He ended up withdrawing from history program at University of Chicago, then later going to Harvard for anthropology. But ultimately he felt like he had to go back to Chicago because this is where he has an ethical obligation to work.
