The Legend of John and Lavina Fissure
John and Lavina Fissure were hanged in South Carolina on February 18th, 1820. John climbed the scaffold without incident but Lavina refused to move from her spot at the bottom of the stairs. The only crime they really acknowledged committing was robbing and beating David Ross. In 1830, a man named Peter Nielsen published a book where he claimed to have been in Charleston at the time of the arrest. He said the Fissures had been robbing and killing for years. And according to Bruce Orr, Nielsen claimed, quote, on digging around this den of iniquity, no doubt the remains of unfortunate travelers.
