Plato's Athens - A Different World
Athenian democracy may seem more exclusionary than the current us. System, because there's no pretence of enfranchising women. A third of the adult population are slaves. There's no attempt to include them. So i say to my students that, from one point of view, you know, so called democratic athens sounds more like the anti bellum south,. It's more like mississippi in 18 50. For the men of athens who did have the franchise, it felt incredibly empowering.
