Jerome's Third Strategy: The New Testament Versus the Old Testament
Jerome was the only figure in the early church who regarded the original text of the old testament as authoritative over against the septuagent. In an amazing turn from his rejection of the inspiration of the 70 translators, jerome reasons that they purposely hid christological prophecies from the pagan king. Jerome thus marshals an apologetic reason for his new translation among christians since he himself knows first hand the strength of debating from the same texts.
