Patient may be able to trigger the breath or initiate the breath, but the ventilator typically gives either a prescribed tital volume or prescribed pressure at a prescribed rate. A whereas in a spontaneous mode, the machine is entirely dependent upon the patient to set their own respiratory pattern,. and the machine just provides support from breath to breath.
