The History of Mechanical Ventilation

In controlled modes of mechanical ventilation, the machine controls most of the characteristics of the breath. Patient may be able to trigger the breath or initiate the breath, but the ventilator typically gives either a prescribed tital volume or prescribed pressure at a prescribed rate. A whereas in a spontaneous mode, the machine is entirely dependent upon the patient to set their own respiratory pattern,. and the machine just provides support from breath to breath.
