Detecting Promylocytic Leukemia With a Smear

When we looked at the smear, the morphology was consistent with blasts. There were cells that had very dense nucleus with scant cytoplasm. And in addition, some of these blasts varied in size and they had densely packed purple granules or zerophilic granules with hour rods. So based on both the flow and the morphology, the pathologist told us that this is highly suspicious of APL or acute pro myelocytic leukemia. But you can probably still make this diagnosis at least clinically or have an index of suspicion for this diagnosis.
