The Phoenicians built a wide-ranging and exceptionally profitable trade network covering the entire Mediterranean. There would have been no Mediterranean world as a shared space of trade and culture if not for these early stages of Phoenician expansion. The enormous Greek expansion was the product of a dizzying array of changes within Greece itself during what we call the Archaic period.
