The History of Antarctica
After World War II, the United States sent an armada consisting of 13 ships and 4,700 men to train for a war with the Soviet Union. But they had an ulterior motive, securing a large portion of the Antarctic for the U.S. The Antarctic Treaty was signed in 1959 by 12 countries; it made it clear that human presence in Antarctica was for scientific cooperation and research.
