The Rights of Patrick's Debt Collection Agency
HMRC can bring old debt demands against you and ask you to pay it. It's a bit of a grey area with statute of limitations, so they are limited to the standard six years from the last acknowledgement in which to take court action. Patrick has just to continue to try and get the information from HMRC at least until he's satisfied that the debt is owing. If it was a joint debt, it's probably possibly a relationship that hasn't worked out,. Maybe Patrick's ex-partner was the primary claimant, and it didn't occur to him to inform tax credits when he'd moved out so that his liability ended. That's a very difficult one to overcome.
