The climate during the roman occupation of britain was warmer than it is now, which allowed for a number of crops that we currently plant in the climate of france. The land was fertile, the resources were abundant, and the people had not managed to effectively cause serious issues for the legions. So why wouldn't caesar have done it? He took two swings at it, after all. And while their leaders were thrilled at the prospect, the rank and file soldiers were likely petrified.
