After the Second World War, political ideologies continued to create boundaries. As the iron curtain divided Europe, it also split Western and Soviet science. With the advent of antibiotics, a Western invention, Phage research was soon abandoned outside communist countries. The institute grew and grew, making Phage preparations and vaccines for the entire USSR.
