The Role of Bone Stress in Running Injuries

The annual incidence of bone stress injuries has been reported between five and circa 20% in track and field athletes. The rate of osteoclastic activity or bone breakdown runs within three weeks of a training load error, so too much too soon, too fast. Yet the bone repair takes about 12 weeks, and one year to fully mineralise. So there's this gap in breakdown and repair. This is because the athlete doesn't have a perfect skeleton. Training errors and a bone stress injury forms or starts.
