Whitman was a politician as well as a poet, an actual politician. The overall population in the united states has grown from under ten million, as it was in 18 20, to 31 million and counting. And the number of slaves has increased as well, to about four million. In one of his poems, he describes a father in terms that biographers generally believe are similar to walt's own feelings about his father.
