Introduction
Pope leo the tenth was elected pope in 15 13 at the age of 37. Leo's famously lavish life style had led to a shortage of fun s for the completion of saint peter's basilica. At one point, he allegedly told the venetian ambassador, since god has been pleased to give us the seead, let us enjoy it. His eyes wander from the musicians to raphael's fresco of the madonna and child hanging on the west wall of the chamber.
