How Do You Track Your Ads?

I feel like I'm playing on easy mode in a lot of these, the little bit of advertising stuff that I mess with. There is a literal, very clear, fixed dollar amount that each customer is worth to me. The thing is, I've noticed that I will have big spikes in how many sales I get through ads. So it feels like an easy calculation, but I think I'm actually still overpaying.
