There have been 224 homicides in Chicago so far this year. Last year there was a recorded 695 homicides, which was eclipsed by the violence in 2021 when there was a record 739 homicides. The governor deployed 30 of these trained peacekeepers into the city in anticipation for this unfortunately expected violent Memorial Day weekend. These peacekeepers were supposed to help with de-escalation and conflict resolution, basically trying to stop violence before it starts.
