Historiansplaining: A historian tells you why everything you know is wrong

CHAPTER

The Origins of Travellers in Ireland

It's hard to match up any known particular historical phenomenon directly to the travellers that we see to day. We know of the existence, even in the early middle ages, of travelling craftsmen and bards. There are signs of extensive evolution of schelta, by which it really diverged into its own distinct language. It seems this divergence must have begun a long time ago, maybe around the 12 hundreds. The majority of traveller families are traditional, meaning they have simply always been travellers since immemorial. They cannot point to any particular point in time where their forbears switched over from being settled to travelling.
