When he first told people that he was going to learn to code the most common response I got was, oh you're going to hate it. One thing I wish I knew when I first started to code is be curious and don't be afraid of trying to learn something complex and difficult. Exorcism I.O. is an app library or a command line tool you can download where you can work on exercises in a number of different languages. Sandy Metz definitely worth checking out her non-technical Outlander series which moves around 18th century Scotland.
