Shimschik is familiar not only to Turks but also to Western investors. He was a finance and treasury minister in the late 2000s before being tapped as deputy prime minister. Shimschik had effectively become sidelined by Erdogan's son-in-law Berat al-Baidak, who became treasury and finance minister in 2018. The appointment allowed Erdogan to do as he pleased with regard to economy and monetary policy.
