In a first century, house church, you're in a room, somebody's reading Matthew. You read the number fourteen. If you're Jewish, eight out of ten people, nine out of 10 people in the room, all get it right away. Oh, that's a symbolic number for King David. Notice that King David's name appears at the beginning of the genealogy twice at the end of the genealog and then once right in the middle where it is number, wait for it, 14 on the list. So this is Matthew's way of saying that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah, once again the son or descendant of David. But it gets better. Next layer down
