Asylums quickly become overcrowded. There's not very much in the way of a substantive, rigorous oversight. These new treatments that were introduced were often not subject to scientific methodology. The food is often inadequate, sometimes spoiled or rotten and the rooms are locked. If the staff is abusive to you, there's no one you can tell about it.
