Duke made himself a cause, and he made his supporters feel like members of a political family. When he wrapped his bigotry in conventional republican politics, he gave his fans an excuse to vote for bigotry. As duke made clear on election, an attack on him was an attack on the whole duke tribe. There hasn't been a campaign in modern american history where the candidate was more attacked and more slandered than senyor daviduke. This was a campaign of grievance and outrage, and winning one election wasn't going to change that.
