The first officer asks engine anti-ice and the captain says off. Why? It's speculated that they were just used to having it off because they flew in Florida all the time. Ice had gotten over the EPR sensors in the engines, which was making them read incorrectly. So since they failed to activate the engine anti- ice systems, that's what caused the engine pressure ratio indicators to provide false readings.
