Stroud entered prison as an illiterate. He was soon a devoted theosophist. The only thing that I don't really believe is when Stroud claimed that he had an operation done on the tendons in his hands by a fellow inmate without aesthetic, without an aesthetic or narcotics. It sounds like it's probably a thing he literally asked for.
