The short answer is we don't truly know but we think it matters quite a bit. Both prematurity and then an episode of AKI increase your risk of CKD. In children with chronic illness, it's very common that they have recurrent episodes of AKI. And so, often, it's just this cumulative damage where they have just a decreased nephron number as they exit their childhood years.
