The absence of pain should be considered as neither good nor bad in the same way that the absence of pleasure is. I agree with you that valuing the non existent from the perspective of the existent is a kind of leap that is philosophically problematic. There are also different ways of thinking about the value of life that go beyond pleasure and pain as the two polarizing values, which i want to talk about a little bit more later.
