There are examples of very simple rule sets that can lead to a lot of what we like to call complexity. Stephen wolfram made them quite famous with his book our cellular automata writing. If you keep on applying the same rule again and again and again, you'll grow a pattern that never repeats. And for one of those rules, there is actually a mathematical proof by a co-worker already that shows that it is undecidable - which is math speak for unpredictable.
