Cyrus and the Greeks - A Brief History of Cyrus

Cyrus and many others assumed that Arteserxes had fled. Therefore, Cyrus himself took fewer precautions as he marched after him. On the next day, he even traveled himself on a chariot with only a few men in battle order in front of him. The following morning, a scout brought news that a large army was heading towards them. This threw Cyrus' inattentive forces into further disarray while everyone scrambled to get into a proper battle order.
