The portrait of the boys as being rich, spoiled rats was firmly solidified in the public consciousness. When their family members defended them by explaining that there was no change in their spending habits from before the murders, that this was their normal pattern. The boys had professional tennis coaches and if they didn't do what Jose wanted them to do, he fired them. Eric claimed that Jose hit Kitty and not surprisingly, Kitty had an explosive temper. She abused alcohol, prescription medication, and she told a friend she didn't want kids and frequently repeated that statement.
