How to Make a Movie About Childhood
"I wanted to make a film about, you know, some moment in my childhood," he says. "But filmmaker, dilemma, you can't, how do you do it? You get someone to play them at different ages." The idea of revisiting the same core cast every year for 12 years hit him as an outside-of-the-box project that would work financially and emotionally. It's so funny when you're in the middle of your crazed ideas, they seem so normal. But I think it hit me because I was solving a problem in an area that I think about a lot: Narrative storytelling and fixing a problem.
