Many Minds

CHAPTER

How Do Chimps Explain Their Behaviors?

Chimps can't explain their behaviors or how they're understanding the situation. When you get to kids like five years old and six years old, they can tell you a fair amount about what they're thinking. Three year old, forget it. You get them saying irrelevant things. And I believe that in this sort of general vygotsky way of looking at things, that giving reasons comes from sociocultural interactions. So if you were asking chimps what they were thinking you'd have all kinds of new problems to deal with.
