In the 19th century, there were different places that you could end up if you were found guilty of a crime or simply didn't have the means to look after yourself. These included lunatic asylums, houses of correction, workhouses and prisons. The worst place was apparently Australia, which was probably a very tough place to try and survive back in those days.
