The Arustic Band of MacMax, Maine
Wabanaki people have been making baskets from black ash, birch bark, and sweet grass for thousands of years. Richard is a tribal elder and vice chief of the Arustic Band of MacMax in Maine. His mother was a basket maker, she learned the art from her mother, who had in turn learned it from her mother. Wabanaki means people of the Donland; their ancestors have been in Maine since glaciers receded 12,000 years ago.
