After the First World War, it was a temporary rise in the number of democracies immediately out of the war. Then there was a catastrophic interwar collapse. And then democracy was recovered after the Second World War spread all over Europe and Japan. So the point is democracy was basically on the rise with big interruptions, and it rose most in the most prosperous market societies.
