CHAPTER

The History of Child Rearing Ideologies

The family was viewed as a microcosm of the church and state, I learned a big word for this presentation, microcosm. Parents and teachers focused on instilling obedience through violence and repetition to create uniform behavior in all of the children. These small community patriarchs relied heavily on interpersonal violence over their wives and children to maintain the status quo. They believed in the concept of original sin. This means that all babies are born bad and evil and mean and stupid. And they're going to go to hell unless they get all of the sin beaten out of them. These precious kids, I can't believe that anyone would think that.
