The Apple III and the TRS-80
The Apple III ran off a stock MOS 6502 processor clocked at 1 MHz. A faster processor would go a long way towards giving the new 3 an edge. The chip that Apple landed on was the Cintech 6502B, which clocked in at 1.8MHz. My guess is that Apple was matching the CPU's frequency up to some internal bus frequency.
