Clean escalation does sort of imply a hierarchy because you're escalating. But you can also escalate to your peer. I'm not going to challenge you to do something that I don't think you can do usually, but it's not like challenge someone to a duel or something. Clean escalation is really about going back to hierarchy people at the same level.
