Reactons is an innate, bodily, automatic vissoresponse to the perceived threat to one's behaviora freedom. A lot ofou knowledge about reactions comes from therapy, where it's very well understood and very much avoided. When clients who want help sense some sort of coercion or manipulation may be afoot, they often instinctively seek to regain their freedom over their own behavior by doubling down on that behavior. And thanks to reactants, they may leave more likely to engage in the harmful behaviours for which they came to therapy in the first place to address. So with all this well established, how does this apply to this new research? Here's michel below.
New research suggests people on opposite sides of wedge issues want to listen to each other. We are each eager to hear differing opinions and understand opposing views, and when we do it can change our minds (at least a little), but only when we aren't triggered by the psychological phenomenon of reactance - one of several ideas we explore in this episode.
