The History of the Honeybee Queen Substance

Colin Butler, the discoverer of honeybee queen substance, only died three years ago. Chemistry has really helped the study of pheromones a great deal. We actually got very close with observations back in the 1870s. French entomologist Jean-Marie Farber tried covering up female moths under gauze but males still found her. He assumed that any smell that is important for sex is something that we can smell. But he forgets male moths are exquisitely sensitive to those molecules.
