There had never been a black cheerleader at Ole Miss in its 134 years of existence. "Clara Dibbs ... who always wanted to be an obvious cheerleader" John was asked if he would consider trying out for the squad, and so did his friend Clara. This was only 20 years after James H. Meredith became the first black student to enter the University of Mississippi.
