The Beggazocca
Jack Shepherd was executed in 1724 and an ambitious young poet John Gay began writing a version of his life which became known as the Beggazocca. When Kurt Varlen Betolbrecht produced their version of the Beggars Opera 200 years after they called it the Thrapony Opera he gave MacHeath a different character so he's become a murderous threatening violent criminal. Brecht composed the words to what was called Dimoritart von Mackey Messer and Vile set the music. The song is a kind of street ballad describes are the various things that he gets up to with murder and extortion.
