How to Change People's Minds in Real Time

I've spent a lot of time criticising what i consider to be bad ideas. So many people come into a conversation at least trying to take the other side of issue. Yet my appetite for debate has diminished, more or less along with the realization that it doesn't work all that well. It's really hard to change people's minds in real time. People tend to change their minds in private. I think i can count on one hand the number of times i've witnessed somebody fundamentally change their mind under pressure.
