The Best Theory of Gravity
Simple theories are never in practice the best fit to the data. Part of the reason their theories didn't fit the data so well is because they were so focused on beauty that they actually went for perfect circles, where the answer was ellipses,. except for Pluto. And so they made a gamble that this is the way to go and that gamble paid off.
