Utilitarianism
The alternative to the dual state is the whole state which includes the parts within it and pays attention to those parts. So even the separation between whole and part is not something which ancient or Eastern philosophy would make. I think that one of the things that makes utilitarianism attractive, especially to young people is it's demanding us compared to a lot of other moral theories that are prevalent now. It requires major lifestyle changes, major changes in your consumer behavior. But what it does produce is spiraling guilt and shame and condescension and war as people become more frustrated with each other for failing to live well.
