The film doesn't really take place in Rome, except for the time that Ben Hur is in Rome. The amount of research that these people did to make this film was epic in and of itself. I noticed one particular detail from my travels in Italy, which was the tile floor in the scene where the Romans are all getting massages. It reminded me of something that I saw in a Colano or an Italian but the Herculaneum.
