Until memory reconciliation was discovered in the 1997 to 2000 period, it looked like the brain had no mechanism for unlearning and erasing an emotional learning. Nearly a century of extension research never eliminated the target learning. It only suppressed it temporarily, and their target learning would reemerge and dominate again over time. If we forgot something that we learned to shield us from something so painful, we would be walking around being devastatingly wounded around every corner.
