Condensation Is a Control Mechanism for Aging-Associated Diseases
A growing list of proteins have an intrinsically disordered region that doesn't fold into a stable shape. Under the right conditions, multitudes of these proteins gather into droplets or condensates. Condensation is therefore a control mechanism that comes with risks. But in evolutionary terms, Yerosh says its advantages are apparently so substantial that the cost of vulnerability to many aging-associated diseases seems to be worth paying.
