Scale Scores for Latent Variable Models
There are many ways of doing this, but what you do is you estimate a factor model and you get the parameter matrices from that model. The problem is these factor scores are only as good as the parameters that serve as weights that go into those. And there are many situations where your fancy pants factor score might actually be worse, if not substantially worse than just add them up.
