Lack of space on the ships made people ledge. So sailors became notorious for being quick to get into fights and not surprisingly. Intoxication was also popular pastime. It allowed escape from the harsh daily conditions they faced. They ate melee rice, drunk water, had some fish of course, dried veggies. Rarely they would get fresh veggies or fruit or pork or poultry. Gambling in particular was one of their favorite things.
